The Extraordinary Life Of Julie Desch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN DIEGO, CALIF – April 16, 2012 — In the second installment of the “Real People” series in which Med Systems recognizes users of its products, we are highlighting Dr. Julie Desch, a physician with cystic fibrosis who has used her considerable education, talent and life experiences to help others.

Julie Desch was the youngest of seven children in a Nebraska family diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth. She began her career by obtaining a B.S. in Life Sciences from the University of Nebraska, and an M.D. at the Stanford Medical School. Though healthy during her years of training, her situation took a turn for the worse when she began practicing as a Surgical Pathologist. The stress of work took a heavy toll, and she began needing IV medications. Then she received the news in her late 30’s that she was about to adopt her first baby boy. Knowing she couldn’t practice medicine, raise a family and stay healthy, she retired.

Raising two boys was a joy and her health stabilized as she was able to be consistent with treatments and exercise. But when the youngest began school, she had time on her hands, and turned her attention to developing expertise in her true passions, exercise and stress management while living with cystic fibrosis. She knew what it was like to let stress control her life. But she also knew it was possible to take control through exercise, nutrition and stress reduction techniques.

She became a certified personal trainer and a licensed wellness coach. She then founded New Day Wellness in 2005 (www.newdaywell.org), a non-profit organization that improves the lives of people with chronic illness through health and wellness coaching, and established a wellness, exercise and nutrition blog (www.sickandhappy.com). She also became a mindfulness-based stress reduction instructor, and hopes to bring this to the cystic fibrosis community. And as if this isn’t enough, she is also a sought-after speaker at numerous events.

Med Systems is pleased to know that Julie Desch has used the Electro Flo® 5000 airway clearance device since October 2010.
