Research Links Higher Pressure In Lung Clearance Devices To Greater Airway Clearance Among Cystic Fibrosis Patients

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN DIEGO, CALIF – December 7, 2011 — Research published in the journal Respiratory Care (June 2010, vol. 55, no.6) titled “Comparison of Settings Used for High-Frequency Chest-Wall Compression in Cystic Fibrosis” by Robert R. Kempainen MD, Carlos Milla MD, Jordan Dunitz MD, Kay Savik MSc, Ann Hazelwood CRT, Cynthia Williams CRT CRC, Bruce K Rubin MEngr MD

MBA, and Joanne L Billings MD draws a clear relationship between higher pressure and greater relief among cystic fibrosis patients.

Cystic fibrosis patients use high-frequency chest-wall compression (HFCWC) to shake loose obstructions. To determine the effect on sputum generated by HFCWC, the researchers compared the airway clearance of patients when they used lower-pressure/mid-frequency HFCWC to when the same patients used higher-pressure/variable frequency HFCWC on a separate occasion.

The results showed that the median sputum wet weight was greater with higher-pressure / variable-frequency HFCWC than with lower-pressure / mid-frequency HFCWC (6.4 g, range 0.49-22.0 g. versus 4.8 g, range 0.24-15.0 g, P = .02). The dry sputum weight differences were not statistically significant.

The researchers concluded that: “In adult CF patients, single-session higher- pressure / variable-frequency HFCWC resulted in greater sputum expectoration by wet weight…”

Previous tests have shown that Med Systems’ Electro Flo® 5000 with Force Multiplying Technology with 30 targeted settings that allow power and frequency to be precisely directed to individual lobes of the lungs to be the most powerful airway clearance device available to patients. This research on HFCWC now confirms the claims of users that it is also the most effective.
